What is PAT testing?

PAT testing is a process where mains electrical appliances are routinely tested for safety. Also known as ‘in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment’, portable appliance testing is made up of a series of smaller tests, including a thorough visual inspection (over 95% of unsafe appliances are highlighted at this stage), earth resistance & continuity tests, an insulation resistance test and in some circumstances (power cords & extension leads) a polarity check. Combined with regular user-checks, this process is used to reduce risk within businesses of all descriptions.

Why PAT test?

Put simply, each business has duty of care towards its employees and members of the public that may visit the site to ensure the electrical equipment they may come into contact with is maintained in a safe manner. PAT testing is not mentioned explicitly in UK law, but several legal acts [1, 2, 3, 4] come into play, and one way to fulfil the requirements of these acts is to regularly test. Insurance companies or your landlord may also specify that you must test, or ‘take all reasonable precautions’ to ensure safety standards are met.

How often should I test?

Well that’s up to you! The idea that it must be done once per year is a myth that has been portrayed over the years by hard-selling & cold-calling PAT test companies. It is actually up to the duty holders to risk assess the different types of appliances they have within their companies, and the different types of environments they are used in and make an informed decision. The Institute of Engineering & Technology issue guidelines as a starting point, and if you are unsure we’re happy to help and advise our customers with this at no-extra cost.

Microwave Oven Leakage Testing

What is it?

Microwave ovens heat food by passing microwave radiation through it. Water, fat and other molecules in the food substances absorb energy from these microwaves, which is a process known as dielectric heating. Generally, the end user will not be exposed to these microwaves, as they are confined to the microwave oven itself by the material from which it is constructed. In some circumstances, particularly in aging equipment, weak points (around the door seal & hinges) may start to leak and allow microwaves out of the appliance. The microwave emissions leakage test ensures any microwaves that do leak out are below a safe level. The interlock switch (the switch that makes it stop when you open the door) is also tested to ensure it stops the microwave oven, which could cause soft tissue damage to the user if not working correctly.

This service is offered for free for all of our PAT testing customers, and will be carried out on every microwave oven that we test for electrical safety.

Fixed Wire Testing

What is Fixed Wire Testing?

Sometimes known as Periodic Inspection, or Periodic Inspection & Testing, this process covers the testing of all the fixed wiring systems within your building, such as mains panels, distributions boards, socket outlets, air conditioning and others. It involves a series of stringent visual inspections followed by electrical tests on all systems within a building. It highlights any problems or potential problems, allowing you to plan any necessary maintenance works. Periodic Testing will involve having to disconnect electrical circuits within the building, so careful planning and management is a necessity to minimise business disruption. It is often best performed outside normal working hours, such as a factory shut-down week, or evening, night-time and weekend testing options are also available.
